The International Handbook of Suicide Prevention showcases the most up-to-date research, policy and practice in suicide prevention. Contributors to this edited volume – a group of the world's leading authorities on suicidal behaviour – address the key issues of why people attempt suicide, the best interventions, treatments and care for those at risk, and the major international challenges in suicide prevention.
The book offers detailed discussion of the difficulties involved in bringing together research, policy and practice in order to achieve the universal goal of a reduction in suicide rates around the world. The editors and contributors argue that, in order for this goal to be achieved, academics, clinicians, survivors - and policy-planners need to work together, to share insights and expertise in order to enhance mutual learning.

Describing the latest theoretically-derived and evidence-based research and practice from across the globe – which will have implications across countries, cultures and the lifespan – this volume is an invaluable source of information and guidance to a broad audience, including health and social care professionals and researchers, and students of psychology and medicine.

The editors have assembled a stellar group of researchers, therapists and policy makers to provide a current and comprehensive review of what we know about suicidal behavior and what strategies exist for preventing suicide. But more than that, this book provides excellent guidelines for those treating suicidal individuals, focusing on evidence-based approaches and innovations in the field, such as the role of mindfulness. In addition, there are chapters that introduce us to novel theories of suicidal behavior that will stimulate our minds and generate innovative research. Scholars and practitioners will find this handbook both stimulating and useful.
—David Lester, President-Elect of the American Association of Suicidology
O'Connor, Platt, and Gordon have assembled an impressive array of scholars and clinicians to offer fresh perspectives on one of the most enigmatic and persistent of human tragedies.
—Ron Maris, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of South Carolina, USA
