"Articles are brief and clearly written, with cross-references generously supplied in small capitals . . . Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty." (Choice, 1 September 2011) "The Wiley-Blackwell Dictionary of Modern European History Since 1789 is the product of the collaboration of three authors: Nicholas Atkin, Michael Biddiss, and Frank Tallett. A remarkable work of erudition, this book contains nearly 1,000 detailed entries covering the breadth of modern European history since 1789. This was a daunting undertaking, and the authors have succeeded, admirably, in crafting an authoritative and informative text that is accessible to both historians and lay readers alike." (History In Review, 11 April 2011)
Nicholas Atkin was Professor of History and Head of the School of Humanities at the University of Reading and the author or editor of several books on European issues. At the time of his death in 2009, he had just published Themes in Modern European History, 1890-1945, co-edited with Michael Biddiss. Michael Biddiss is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Reading, and a former President of the Historical Association. He is the author, co-author, or co-editor of numerous books and articles on modern Europe. Frank Tallett is Head of the School of Humanities at the University of Reading, and Co-Director of its Centre for the Advanced Study of French History. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he is also the author or co-author of several books, including Priests, Prelates and People: A History of European Catholicism from 1750 to the Present (2003).
The Wiley-Blackwell Dictionary of Modern European History Since 1789 is an authoritative and highly accessible reference guide to the major people, events, and issues that have shaped Europe's development from the time of the French Revolution to the opening of the 21st century. This comprehensive volume features almost one thousand encyclopedic entries, written in collaboration by a trio of distinguished historians. The authors move well beyond basic definitions and descriptions to provide readers with a richer analytical understanding of the wider significance of historical events as they unfolded over the course of two centuries. Associated links and connections are revealed through an extensive series of cross-references. A sequence of maps charting the evolution of modern European states offers further clarity. The work covers the whole of continental Europe, as well as relevant aspects of the British experience. Lively and authoritative, the Wiley-Blackwell Dictionary of Modern European History Since 1789 is an indispensable reference guide to the broad sweep of historical events and experiences that have shaped the Europe we see today.
