Stefan G. Hofmann is Professor of Psychology at Boston University and the Director of the Psychotherapy and Emotion Research Laboratory. The incoming President of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, he is widely published with more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and 10 books, including An Introduction to Modern CBT (2011, Wiley-Blackwell).
Traditional anti-anxiety medications and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are popular treatments for clients suffering from a wide range of anxiety disorders. However, there is a clear need for improved efficacy of these approaches, either when administered as mono-therapies or in combination. A promising contemporary approach to combination therapy is to enhance the mechanism of CBT utilizing pharmacological agents.

Psychobiological Approaches for Anxiety Disorders represents the first work to offer a comprehensive overview of the latest empirical evidence and research results on conventional and novel combination therapies for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Leading experts in neuroscience, psychiatry, psychopharmacology, emotion research, and psychotherapy address the evidence for and against combining pharmacological agents with CBT for the treatment of anxiety disorders, and outline the most promising future approaches. The result is an invaluable resource for clinicians and researchers alike.

There are two major treatment approaches for anxiety and its disorders: psychological and pharmacological. But for too long these treatment approaches have been administered like ships passing in the night with little or no useful information available on when or why they should be integrated and combined. Now Stefan Hofmann in a groundbreaking edited volume gives this topic the broadest and deepest coverage it has yet enjoyed looking at current evidence and possible mechanisms of action involved in integrating not only the major compounds such as benzodiazepines and selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with psychological treatments, but also some of the newer compounds such as D-cycloserine and oxytocin. Ending with a road map for the future, this volume should be on the shelf of every clinician and clinical investigator working on the problem of pathological anxiety.
—David H. Barlow, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, Founder and Director Emeritus, Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, Boston University

Internationally recognized research psychologist, Stefan Hofmann, has brought together leading experts on the neuroscience, effectiveness, and clinical use of biological treatments for the major anxiety disorders. This volume – Psychobiological Approaches for Anxiety Disorders – is a seminal book and a remarkable achievement. Each chapter provides a clear, scholarly review of the research on medications and even the use of dietary supplements in combination with CBT, or alone. This unique volume will become the standard reference for anyone seriously interested in the important question of whether combination treatments are helpful and – if they are or are not – why this is the case. A major contribution to the field, I think that all researchers and informed clinicians will want to read this book.
—Robert L. Leahy, Clinical Professor of Psychology, Weill-Cornell University Medical School and Director, American Institute for Cognitive Therapy
