Diabetes has become a worldwide epidemic and its prevalence continues to increase. According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 180 million people worldwide have diabetes. Many healthcare providers, particularly in developing countries such as China and India, where at least 50% of these patients will live in the future, have no valid plans for dealing with this burden. In addition, Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for about 95% of cases of diabetes, is detected 8 to 10 years too late. During this important preclinical phase, many of the micro- and macrovascular complications develop ‘silently’. Early diagnosis of diabetes and of its complications, with subsequent management according to evidence-based clinical guidelines, would have a major beneficial impact on quality of life and healthcare costs. <p>This book provides a unique and comprehensive synopsis of the prevention and early diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. It features articles by key opinion leaders in diabetes from North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region who describe the gravity of the problem and the important issue of screening, including contributions on the perspectives of the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization.</p> <p>Once patients at risk have been identified, the key issue is to prevent their progression to full-blown diabetes.
