Patriotism and citizenship education have become controversial topics in many countries at different times and for various reasons. This book sets out a range of perspectives on patriotism, sketches the different contexts within which the controversies evolved, and outlines views of how patriotism should be handled in citizenship education.

Seven authors from the United States, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and England describe the nature of the controversy in their country. They offer their accounts of patriotism and citizenship education as an important current educational and social issue in their society, taking differing perspectives on aspects of the topic of significance in their particular context. One author considers education for world citizenship. All authors base their identification of the issues, their presentation of cogent argument, and their conclusions upon their philosophical understanding of education and schooling.
