“Overall my impression of this book is that it is a very useful resource to add to my clinician’s catalogue of materials to use when treating patients with BDD.” (British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies, 1 October 2012)

David Veale is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and The Priory Hospital North London, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. His main research and clinical interests are in Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). He is the author of four books and over 70 peer-reviewed articles.
Fugen Neziroglu is a board certified behavioural/ cognitive and clinical psychologist involved in the research and treatment of anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders. She is Clinical Director of the Bio-Behavioral Institute in Great Neck, NY, USA; Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Hofstra University in Long Island, NY; and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at New York University. She has published over 14 books, which have been translated into various languages, and written over 150 peer reviewed articles on obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders. She is on the scientific advisory board of the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation.

Being dissatisfied with one’s appearance is normal, but Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is something different. Someone with BDD is preoccupied with their appearance, is excessively self-conscious and experiences marked distress as a result. As a group, individuals with BDD have high rates of suicide, psychiatric hospitalisation and unemployment. They are often housebound or socially isolated and have great difficulties with relationships.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Treatment Manual is the first to provide both an overview of the current knowledge of BDD and a framework for appropriate treatment of the condition using cognitive behaviour therapy and medication. Owing to a lack of research, BDD is often misdiagnosed and treated inappropriately. Patients frequently mask their main condition and present with symptoms of depression, social phobia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, resulting in treatment with misdirected therapies and inappropriate anti-psychotic medication.

Ideal for practitioners in clinical psychology, psychiatry and medicine, Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Treatment Manual furthers our understanding of the condition and provides practical advice on its assessment and treatment.

"Few clinicians in the world are as experienced as Drs Veale and Neziroglu in the effective treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Their comprehensive book transcends the typical treatment manual. It provides an impressively science-driven understanding of BDD, as well as a richly detailed protocol for practitioners. The wisdom and guidance in this book can significantly aid in alleviating the personal suffering that BDD brings."
—Thomas F. Cash, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Old Dominion University, USA, and author of The Body Image Workbook, Second Edition (2008)
